To kinda close this thread I have a suggestion. Even though my issue has been resolved, others may have similar issues that IMHO should be handled similarly to what ShadowProtect does. It first uses its own VSC driver, and if the copy is unusable, it fails back to the system (Microsoft) driver. I had no issues with disk images even when the ShadowProtect driver (the default) wasn't working properly as it had that fall back option. Instead of having an option to select the VSC driver in CR, it could first attempt to make a copy using a default driver, and if there is an error using that copy, fall back to the system driver if it's different from a default driver.
