Is Settings/Engine/Analyze exit code checked?

No it is was not. Maybe you should consider making that the default.

The confusion was created by Task/Events/Pre-backup events, "Cancel the task if some event fails". To me that line meant that the exit codes were analysed. Maybe because I also do programming, I read it a little to literally as in how else would Reflector know a task had failed. Perhaps you meant "task not found"?
I will be able to test at the customer site in a few day.
